Finding yourself
As human beings, we navigate through life using the tools and defense mechanisms we learned from childhood. Our adaptability allows us to survive and find success in our social lives, careers, relationships, and family life. But when the ability to adapt to external constraints is valued above our individual worth, we lose our sense of self.
The term “sense of self” refers to the perception you have of yourself, your worth, and your abilities.
The “self” is who you truly are. It is the source of love, compassion, intelligence, creativity, curiosity and strength. It cannot be erased or broken. It is unwavering, endlessly giving, and infinitely powerful.
The danger of a lost sense of self goes beyond underestimating yourself. The self is also the messenger for all human needs - like food, water, sleep, shelter, safety, intimacy, etc. A non-compassionate sense of self prevents your needs from being recognized, and met.
A strong sense of self is therefore vital for a fulfilling life, and harmony in mental, physical and spiritual health.
At North Shore Counseling, our goal is to rediscover the self in a safe environment. We use modern psychotherapy techniques to map the sources of thoughts and behaviors. Our environment and childhood influences become the foundation of our emotions and thought patterns, for better or for worse. Mapping out the sources of learned behavior gives us the power to re-evaluate them in the present, and thus the freedom to choose how our past influences us.
